Accelerated Reader at Eastern Greene Elementary
AR (Accelerated Reader) is a computer program that contains a multiple-choice comprehension test on a book's content. Each AR book is assigned a point value based on the number of words it contains and its reading difficulty. Tests may have 5, 10, or 20 questions, depending on the length and difficulty of the book.
To participate in AR, a student selects and reads a book with an AR quiz available. After reading the selected book, the student accesses Renaissance Place on a school computer, logs in and takes the AR quiz. The computer scores the test, awards the student points based on the results, and keeps a complete record.
Most books in the elementary library are marked with a red spine label to indicate if an AR quiz is available. Also, inside the book a label with the R.L. (reading level) Pts. (point value of book) and Quiz ID# (useful to quickly reference the quiz) indicates an AR book.
It is especially important to remember a few tips with early readers. If the book was read with them or to them, the quiz will probably need to be read to them as well. Many times with an early reader, the book should be reread or reviewed prior to taking the AR quiz. Keeping a Reading Log with the title and/or Quiz ID# is extremely helpful as well.
